Since 2011, K-Space has devised four full-length plays—disOriented (2011), TALA (2015), PILLOWTALK (2018), NERO (2024)—and created over 45 community-based, experimental projects. Our work centers stories of (im)migration, queerness, trauma and the ways these intersect in communities of color; it’s described as “intensely personal” by American Theater Magazine and “very much of this moment” by the New York Times.
How We Devise Work
K-Space’s Peacemaking Theater™ has been performed at The Brick, New Ohio Theater, HERE, BRIC, LaGuardia Performing Arts Center, Performance Project @ University Settlement, developed in residence at Pregones/Puerto Rican Traveling Theater, Baryshnikov Arts Center, Bushwick Starr, University of Washington and K-Space has toured to Victory Gardens (Chicago), Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral (Santiago, Chile) and Ewha Womans University (South Korea).
K-Space grew from an underground collective of like-minded artists gathering in a midtown apartment to a devising company creating work for our community, which is primarily queer, Asian-American, Latine, and immigrant. Our ensemble is comprised of Mondragons, resident artists who practice consensus-based decision-making on our performances, design and long-term artistic priorities.

In our devising process, we challenge each other to work outside our trained disciplines. We invite non-artists to make theater with us to dismantle the divisions that artificially separate professional and amateur artists. We design our process to be open-ended and refine our work in dialogue with our community, by facilitating community driven conversations as invitations to collectively problem-solve issues and identify local opportunities for change. These conversations fuel our process, which averages 3-4 years, as theater making becomes a catalyst for advancing social change.

Our Mondragons are diverse artists from different cultures, working in different disciplines, and we collaboratively frame our stories through an anti-oppression lens. By breaking the boundaries of language, culture, and artistic forms of expression, we theatricalize invisible systems of oppression by melding text, performance, movement, music, visual and sound design.
